Every year, Women’s Month invites us to celebrate innovation, impact and progress. It is a time to acknowledge the women who are leading, building and reshaping industries across South Africa and the continent – a mission we embody everyday.
At DW, we believe the future is shaped by the people we choose to see, support and remember – that belief is what inspired Future 54 Leading Women.
Created by Director Woman, Future 54 LW is an annual editorial list recognizing women whose work is creating meaningful impact across Africa. It exists to shine a light on founders, executives, creatives, researchers, public servants, innovators and community leaders whose contributions are shaping the future in ways both visible and quietly transformative.
During this year’s nomination window, which ran from 8 June to 19 July, we received an inspiring 141 nominations from South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Lesotho, Botswana and Namibia.
“For our first ever installment of Future 54 LW, we are incredibly proud of the response and especially the calibre of founders, colleagues, mentors\mentees and peers who stepped forward to nominate themselves and other women who’ve made it their mission to make a mark in their respective careers and industries,” says Masekane Nkwana, the founder of Director Woman publisher, Hello African Media.
She adds, “while only 54 women appear on this year’s list, we believe recognition does not begin or end with a single publication.” There are many more women whose work deserves to be seen, and we hope Future 54 LW continues to grow into a platform that tells those stories throughout the year.
As an editorial publication, our role extends beyond publishing names. We are committed to documenting the people, ideas and movements shaping the future of women’s leadership in Africa.
To every woman who submitted a nomination, and to everyone who took the time to nominate someone whose work they admire, thank you for trusting us with your stories.
