Theo Boitshwarelo is building a case for a more inclusive green economy – one where sustainability knowledge, entrepreneurship and opportunity are accessible far beyond traditional urban and corporate spaces.

A sustainability advocate, green entrepreneur and founder of Eco-Gen Africa, Boitshwarelo works at the intersection of climate literacy, sustainable development, entrepreneurship and responsible business. Through Eco-Gen Consultancy, she also provides sustainability, procurement and ESG advisory services, particularly to SMEs and MMEs.

Her work is grounded in a belief that Africa’s transition towards a more sustainable future must be practical, locally relevant and inclusive.

One example is the Green Entrepreneurship Lab, an incubator supporting entrepreneurs working in the green economy with the knowledge, capacity and networks needed to turn sustainability-focused ideas into viable ventures. Alongside her work with young people, Boitshwarelo has collaborated across government, academia, civil society and the private sector to advance climate education and sustainable development.

She is also developing her technical expertise in procurement and supply chain management as a CIPS Level 6 student, strengthening her understanding of how sustainability can be embedded into the systems through which organisations operate and make decisions.

Her ambitions extend beyond individual programmes. Over the next five years, Boitshwarelo wants to build initiatives that reach people across generations and geographies, from primary school learners to older communities, while extending sustainability education and economic opportunities into rural and underserved areas.

That vision reflects her understanding that sustainability should be accessible to everyone, rather than becoming a privilege available only to those with the resources to participate.

Her approach to leadership is evolving alongside that mission. Boitshwarelo is intentionally cultivating servant leadership while learning to balance empathy with accountability. She believes listening, collaboration and creating opportunities for others are fundamental to good leadership, while also recognising the importance of setting boundaries, having difficult conversations and maintaining high standards.

A key part of that development is self-awareness. She is committed to doing the personal work required to lead with greater emotional maturity, ensuring that past experiences do not determine how she responds to the people and challenges around her.

Her advice to other women comes from the same place of self-belief: your gifts can open doors before you feel completely ready to walk through them.

Boitshwarelo’s journey demonstrates the value of stepping into opportunities with courage, continuing to learn and trusting that capability can grow alongside responsibility.
