FUTURE 54 | THAYU KILILI

Thayu Kilili

Thayu Kilili has spent more than a decade exploring what happens when creativity is treated not simply as an art form, but as infrastructure for communities, culture and change.

A Kenyan creative director, storyteller, cultural strategist and founder, Kilili is the Creative Director of Creatives Garage, one of East Africa’s leading creative ecosystems. Through the organisation, she has helped build platforms that connect artists, encourage collaboration and create pathways for creatives to develop sustainable careers. Together with its wider community, Creatives Garage has supported more than 14,000 creatives across East Africa through storytelling, innovation, mentorship and cultural programming.

Her own creative practice moves across disciplines, including film, theatre, publishing, immersive installations, games, fashion, design and emerging technologies. What connects these seemingly different worlds is her interest in African storytelling and the possibilities that emerge when culture and technology meet.

Kilili’s work has received international recognition, including the Prince Claus Seed Award, Google Impact Challenge Award, National Diversity & Inclusion Award and Zuri Awards, alongside nominations from the Fak’ugesi Awards, Kenya Theatre Awards, Women in Film Awards and Upinde Awards.

But as her career has evolved, so has her understanding of leadership.

After serving as Managing Director of Creatives Garage, Kilili has moved into the role of Creative Director, a transition that reflects her belief that strong institutions must be capable of outliving their founders. Rather than holding tightly to every part of what she has built, she is intentionally creating space for the next generation to lead.

For Kilili, letting go is not stepping back from impact. It is another way of creating it.

Her focus now is on creative vision, experimentation and storytelling, while mentoring emerging creative leaders and exploring new technologies that could expand how African stories are created and experienced.

That includes her interest in artificial intelligence and other emerging tools, but her approach remains grounded in human creativity. She wants African creatives to have the freedom to experiment, collaborate across disciplines and imagine futures that are not constrained by existing systems.

Over the next five years, Kilili hopes to contribute to a creative economy in which African stories are increasingly created, owned and archived by African people. She wants to build platforms where creatives can access technology, develop sustainable enterprises and see their work as a pathway to economic opportunity as well as cultural expression.

She is already working towards that future by continuing to build ecosystems, mentor creatives and explore the intersection of culture, technology and storytelling. Her ambition extends beyond creating individual projects. It is about building the conditions in which many more people can create.

That focus on possibility is also reflected in the woman Kilili is intentionally becoming. She is cultivating patience, curiosity and the courage to pursue ideas before there is a clear roadmap for them. She is learning to lead with imagination while remembering that leadership also requires making room for others and nurturing herself along the way.

Her definition of legacy is therefore becoming broader.

It is not only about the films, experiences, stories or platforms she creates. It is about the people she helps develop, the communities she strengthens and the possibilities she makes visible to others.

Her advice to women is simple: start.

Do not wait until every resource is available or every detail is perfect. Kilili’s own journey has moved across multiple identities and disciplines, demonstrating that a woman does not have to choose one fixed definition of herself. She can be an artist, entrepreneur, storyteller, leader and innovator, and she can evolve as she learns.

For her, the first step is often the most important one. Start with what you know, use what you have and allow the journey to teach you what comes next.

Because every time a woman gives herself permission to experiment, create and take up space, she expands what becomes possible for the women who follow.
