Kala

Good communication can change perceptions. Great communication can change what people do with those perceptions. For Taazima Kala, that distinction has shaped a career dedicated to making communications more strategic, ethical and meaningful.

Based in Gaborone, Kala is the General Manager and Chief Consultant of Hotwire, an Africa-focused public relations consultancy where she advises organisations on reputation management, stakeholder engagement, public affairs and strategic communications. She has more than a decade of experience in the profession and has contributed to projects spanning business, government, development and public-interest initiatives.

Her work has included strategic advisory roles on nationally significant initiatives such as Botswana’s e-Government Programme, the Botswana Telecommunications Corporation privatisation, the Letshego Namibia IPO and Botswana’s campaign for the Chairpersonship of the African Union Commission.

Kala’s influence extends beyond the organisations she advises. In 2025, she became the first Motswana to be admitted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, a distinction recognising senior practitioners who have made an exceptional contribution to the profession.

She now serves as Chair of the CIPR International Committee, connecting communications professionals across countries and cultures while helping advance responsible practice within the global profession. The committee’s 2026 profile describes Kala as a long-standing member of the CIPR community and highlights her work at Hotwire, as well as her involvement with the Harvard Business Review Advisory Council and Forbes Agency Council.

For Kala, professional influence is closely tied to continuous learning. Her academic and professional development spans English language and literature, early modern English, business leadership and management, an Executive MBA, wellbeing and women’s leadership. She has also increasingly turned her attention to artificial intelligence and the implications of emerging technology for communications.

Her interest in AI is not simply about adopting new tools. Kala is particularly interested in the human judgement required to use them responsibly. In a recent article, she argued that as AI makes communication execution faster and content more abundant, discernment and professional judgement become even more important.

That philosophy reflects the kind of leader she is deliberately becoming.

Kala is working on being more self-aware, learning to pause before acting and becoming more comfortable examining both her strengths and shortcomings. For her, the pause is not hesitation. It is a leadership tool – creating space for more nuanced problem-solving, better decisions and stronger relationships with the people she leads.

Her commitment to impact also extends beyond her professional role.

Kala serves as Board Chair of Learn To Play, a Botswana-based social enterprise focused on early childhood education and play-based learning. The organisation works with children, caregivers and communities to strengthen early childhood development, giving Kala an opportunity to contribute to a cause outside the communications industry.

She also uses her expertise to mentor and develop the next generation of communications professionals, advocating for stronger ethical standards, strategic thinking and professional development across the industry.

Her vision for her work is therefore broader than reputation management. Whether contributing to education campaigns, financial literacy initiatives, human-wildlife conflict communication or health education, Kala wants her work to make information more accessible and ultimately improve how people experience and respond to important issues.

For the next generation of communicators, she hopes to leave behind a profession that is more responsible, more thoughtful and more equipped to navigate a rapidly changing world.

Her advice to other women is rooted in the same self-awareness she is cultivating herself: pay attention to how you are showing up. If work or life no longer feels aligned, listen to the people you trust, listen to your own body and give yourself permission to course-correct.

She also believes no ambitious woman should attempt to navigate leadership alone. Finding a circle of people who can challenge you honestly, celebrate your growth and create space for laughter, learning and reflection is part of becoming a stronger leader.

Kala’s career demonstrates the power of combining expertise with curiosity. From advising organisations on high-stakes communications to helping shape the global PR profession, she continues to learn, question and evolve – while keeping sight of a simple goal: to use communication as a force for better decisions, stronger communities and meaningful change.
