FUTURE 54 | ZAMA KHUMALO

Zama Khumalo

Zama Khumalo is building spaces where women can see themselves as creators, founders and leaders in technology.

With more than five years of experience across media and communications, Khumalo has worked with organisations and brands including the SABC, Meropa Communications, eThekwini Municipality, Unilever and Liquorice. As an Online Media Specialist, she develops digital campaigns and brand strategies that combine creative thinking, technology and communication to strengthen visibility and engagement.

But her work beyond the corporate environment is where her wider purpose comes into focus.

Khumalo is the Founder of KZN Tech Mbokodo, an initiative created to empower women in technology through skills development, mentorship, community and opportunities to showcase their work. She is also the Founder of Blue Paw Communications, which profiles and amplifies individuals and organisations operating within the technology ecosystem.

For Khumalo, the word “Mbokodo” – meaning rock – captures the kind of community she wants to build: strong, supportive and foundational.

She believes women in underserved communities need more than access to technical training. They need environments where they can learn without fear, fail without shame and develop the confidence to see themselves as capable of building and leading in technology.

That belief informs the way she approaches empowerment.

A woman learning to build a website, manage data or market her business digitally is not simply acquiring an individual skill, Khumalo argues. The impact can extend to her family, create economic opportunities and become an example for another woman watching her.

Her vision is therefore intentionally community-led.

Over the next five years, she wants KZN Tech Mbokodo to expand nationally, reaching women across townships, rural communities and cities. She is working towards partnerships that can scale its training programmes, amplify the stories of women in technology and, crucially, connect skills development to real opportunities in entrepreneurship and the digital economy.

That ambition reflects the kind of leader Khumalo is working to become: one who serves with purpose and measures success not only by what she achieves, but by how many people she brings with her.

Her own leadership philosophy has been shaped by learning to embrace different seasons of growth. She no longer sees progress simply as more titles, funding or visibility. Some seasons are about planting, she says, when the work happens quietly and few people see it. Others are about pruning, letting go of what no longer fits, while others bring the opportunity to harvest and pour back into others.

The lesson has helped her resist comparison and focus on building with integrity.

She also believes strongly in standing in your truth, particularly in rooms where you may be the only woman, young founder or person from an underserved community. Rather than shrinking to fit those spaces, Khumalo wants women to recognise that their difference can be part of their strength.

It is a message she carries into her work with emerging women in technology: you belong here.

For Khumalo, empowerment is ultimately about making that belief tangible – through skills, mentorship, visibility, community and access to opportunity.

She wants to build tables rather than wait for invitations to them, and to create a future in which more women have the confidence and tools to build their own.
